theatre & performing arts photography
Photographing theatre and performing arts poses its own unique challenges. In order to try and capture the atmosphere, one has to rely as much as possible on the lighting designer, so the use of flash is generally avoided if at all possible. Sometimes there isn't much light to use, which requires longer than normal shutter speeds, which can introduce camera shake, so a steady hand is needed.
Done properly, you can capture those dramatic moments forever.

I am also commissioned to take pre-production publicity photographs for drama societies. This particular photograph was taken for Rackheath Players production 'The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree' making its UK premiere in February 2008. This was shot on location in North Norfolk on a very cold and windy November morning (much to the surprise of the locals)

information
I normally attend on final dress rehearsal, as everyone will be in full make-up & costume, lights and set are ready, although I may request to sit in on an earlier rehearsal for familiarisation . A copy of the script in advance is helpful, and a quick chat with the Stage Manager or Director would be useful as well.
The pictures are then roughly processed to sort the wheat from the chaff and they are then published on my website gallery where prints can be purchased. I also drop off a set of contact prints and an order form, although i recommend viewing on the website as it gives a better indication of the picture than a small thumbnail.
Chosen photos are then tweaked, professionally printed and then posted to those members who have ordered them. Prints can be colour, black and white or sepia toned.
