2) Aaron Pullan

3) Gary Lawrence

4) Ralph Budd

5) Chris Shackle

All drivers came back praising the new circuit!

2) Aaron Pullan

3) Ian Davis

4) Charlie Budd

5) Paul Corbridge

Race 2

Dave Pittard again used his track knowledge to pull away from the field finishing 17 seconds ahead of Aaron Pullan, who had slowed because of a loose exhaust, with Paul Corbridge getting his first MR2 podium in 3rd.

1) Dave Pittard

2) Aaron Pullan

3) Paul Corbridge

4) Ian Davis

Castle Combe RED DRAGON Race & Track Club

FUCHS TITAN MR2 Racing Series
Castle Combe was the venue for rounds 3 & 4 of the FUCHS TITAN MR2 Racing series on 30th May, 2011.
Qualifying
35 drivers lined up on a wet circuit for qualifying, Jason Jesse and Aaron Pullan found conditions not to their liking and attacked the barriers, Dave Pittard proved to be the wet master or the day from Mat Smith and Richard Avery to 5 were as follows…
1) David Pittard
2) Mat Smith
3) Richard Avery
4) Ralph Budd
5) Charlotte Burridge
6) Steve Hennessy
Race 1
With the circuit still wet and still raining, Dave Pittard lead off the line from Mat Smith and Richard Avery, Richard moved up to 2nd place but lost control and spun backwards into the barrier losing him a few places, so another win for Pittard from Mat Smith and Mark Woods.
Race 2
With a drying track now for this race and almost the last race of the day the grid was formed up ready with Dave Pittard on pole again and true to his form all day he left the start line and pole never to be seen again by the grid, he finished a full 4 seconds ahead of Aaron Pullan who was 5 seconds ahead of 3rd place Jonny White, unfortunately front row starter Matt Smith had a mechanical / car fire after an off the track moment, this also covering part of the circuit in oil, thus causing quite a few cars to spin off.
1) Dave Pittard
2) Aaron Pullan
3) Jonny White
4) Ralph Budd
5) Jon Winter
The Red Dragon Race & Track Club Promoted series next visits the New Snetterton 300 circuit on 26/6/2011

The Red Dragon race & track club started its 2011 racing season at Brands Hatch Indy circuit on the 1st of May with a full grid of 30 cars. Steve Vince the series organiser said we have 12 new novice drivers joining the series or 2011, its a great series for first time racers with cheap cars to buy or build yourselves and controlled regulations to make for close racing.

qualifying
with 39 cars on the circuit on the short indy circuit finding space for a good lap was going to be crucial, the best man at this job was car 69 Simon Lockey followed by car 26 Arron Pullan, both drivers lapped in the high 59 secs, there then followed 7 drivers all lapping in the i mins, led by car 9 Dave Pittard, 13 drivers then followed in the 1 min 1 sec.

race 1
After a frantic start this soon developed into a 3 car race at the front with car 9 Dave Pittard taking the win from Arron Pullan car 26 and car 51 Adam Lockwood, the front 3 covered by only 1 second.

race 2
Fantastic racing all through the grid probably one of the best races I have ever seen said Steve Vince, what a great advert for the series, the race win going to car 9 Dave Pittard from Arron Pullan car 26 then car 80 Dave Thomas and 51 Adam Lockwood, these four covered by less than 1 second.
the leading lady in the races was car 38 Charlotte Burridge with 24th in race 1 and 20 in race 2.
the series now moves on to Castle Combe on the 30th of May.

The Red Dragon race and track club organisers of one of the 2010`s UK motor sports biggest success stories the “MR2 MK1 Racing series”,have announced their racing calender for 2011.
Steve Vince the promoter of the series says he is amazed at the interest shown for 2011, the registrations are coming in fast, Steve Vince puts the series success down to his original format of “cheap as chips racing!”

Brands Hatch Oct 24th                                                                               (photo of  Alex Gassman most accomplished driver of 2010 and winner at Brands Hatch)

For the final two races the RED DRAGON RACE & TRACK CLUB visited Brands Hatch on Oct 24th.

as with all year we enjoyed full grids again for the last two rounds at Brands Hatch a grid of 34 cars lined up for qualifying on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, over night rain had left the circuit  damp with a drying line, pole position went to Alex Gassman from Adam Lockwood, Ross Stoner , Jonny White ,Mark Scott and Neil Stratton.

Race 1

The track was fully dry for race one, Alex Gassman had a start too finish victory chased hard by Adam Lockwood and Dave Pittard, Ross Stoner made his way up to 4th place after a flag infringement during qualifying which had caused him so start from 20th on the grid.

Race 2

It rained hard before race 2 making conditions very tricky, Ross Stoner made best start from Dave Pittard , Adam Lockwood and Alex Gassman, Alex Gassman then got spun out at Druids on lap 1, he then completed the first lap in 30th place, then had a great drive through the field to finish in 4th place.

Up front Ross Stoner and Dave Pittard were having a great battle, Dave passed Ross at Paddock on the last lap, Ross then fought back with an outside move at Druids but ran out of track. So a win to Dave Pittard from Adam Lockwood with Jonny White in 3rd.

A great end to a fantastic MR2 MK1 racing year with new drivers already ordering race cars to be built for 2011  it looks like 2011 will be dare I predict ,even better!

MR2 RACING at Cadwell Park August 22nd

Cadwell Park for rounds 8 and 9 of the MR2 RACING Series with Red Dragon Race and Track club, Sunday race day was nice and sunny saw an absolutely full grid of 32 cars, qualifying was damp but drying due too a wet night so Hall Bends was interesting!
Qualifying saw Alex Gassman in car 48 get pole followed by Sarah Wherry in car 4 in 2nd place both lapping in 1 min 50 sec, then Ross Stoner in car 22 with a 1min 51 lap.

race 1
was a four car battle between Alex Gassman car 48, Ross Stoner car 22 , Sarah Wherry car 4 and David Hemingway car 5, the win went too Gassman from Stoner, Wherry and Hemingway, with the rest of the grid over two seconds behind having there own battles lead by Chris Shackle in car 77 and Shane Wright car 71 and Matt Smith.

race 2
Again the same four leading the pack this time saw Ross Stoner take 1st from the first lap up Coppice from Gassman then Wherry who was also taken by Hemingway on the first lap, this order continued with all four drivers chasing hard and leaving the grid again, with hot battles going on behind on this tight twisty circuit, on lap 5 the front order changed again seeing Wherry sneak an underpass on Hemingway at the bottom of the Mountain to take back third again and then hold this until the chequed flag, so race podium went too Ross Stoner 1st,Alex Gassman 2nd and Sarah Wherry 3rd the next rounds will be at Mallory Park on September 19th.

BRSCC Snetterton report (Sunday)

Posted by Andrew Cliffe On June - 2 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The weather for Sunday’s meeting at Snetterton was a lot better than the previous day which was mostly wet and horrible, being dull and grey in the morning before cheering up in the afternoon.   As is often the case with Snetterton, there was a strong wind blowing across the track.

The Itchy Feet OSS (Open Sportscar Series) Championship was out first, with pole being taken by Jim Hutchinson in his Nissan engined Jade, but it was Tony Sinclair who, like the previous day, took the top step of the podium with in his Jade.   Graham Cole made it a Jade 1-2-3 with his third position.   Itchy Feet sell Motorhomes in case you were wondering!

The Fiat Racing Challenge provided a somewhat depleted grid, with Paul Copeland taking Punto honours, ahead of the two McMahon Puntos, Barry seven seconds off the lead, and just a second ahead of Arthur.    Mark Snelling was the leading Uno Roger Esp 30 seconds behind him.  Seven finishers in all.

The BRSCC F3 series were out next, everyone was watching the weather and debating whether to go for a fully dry or a compromised setup in case of rain.     Alex Craven was on pole once again, but it was 2009 champ Chris Needham who took the lead.    Craven incurred a startline penalty which initially brought out a black flag, but this was changed during the race to a 10 second penalty.  A spin early on cost him dearly as to win he would need 10 seconds of clear air between him and whoever was 2nd.    In the end it was Chris Needham who took the win, with Mark Terry closing to just under a second behind the leader.  Craven was classified third 11 seconds adrift (after penalty applied).   Mark Harrison had an exciting dice with Alf Skeels in their Dallara F301′s, positions changing several times before Harrison pulled away.  Mark said that he wished he’d gone for a fully dry setup afterwards – although the skies did look black and threatening…

The Toyota MR2 series took several goes at getting their first race underway, with a red flag following shortly after the flags went out.    A bumper entry of over 35 closely matches cars, many novices, meant that accidents are always a possibility.    The race was reduced to 12 minutes after the 2nd red flag.   Pole sitter and regular pace setter Alex Gassman lost out with Arron Pullan and Adam Lockwood leapfrogging him on the opening lap.   The same trio took the same positions in race two, which was thankfully free of startline drama.

The Dunlop TVR Challenge Cars were sharing a grid with the Quaife Intermarque League of silhouette cars.   The TVR’s were headed by a number of ex-Tuscan Challenge racers, with some race cars derived from road car origins close behind, although they were not quite a match for the Silhouette cars which at first glance look like road cars on steroids, but are really purpose built race cars which happen to wear a fibreglass body which looks like an Audi TT, BMW Z4 amongst others.

Steve Hall took the race win with his Audi TT, with Keith White’s BMW Z4 and Mick Robertson’s VW Corrado 2nd and 3rd.   Hugh Marshall was first TVR home with Graham Walden and Jamie Golby behind.     Race two was again headed by Hall, with Chris Brickhurst’s Peugeot 206 2nd and Dean Cook in his TVR Tuscan taking third overall.

Vaughan Fletcher’s Subaru Impreza took pole and two race wins in the Nippon Challenge.    Ian Froggatt, in another Impreza that was wearing a novice cross, took a well deserved 2nd on the grid despite a somewhat wild qualifying session which saw a couple of offs at the end of the Revett Straight, but he lost out during the first race after the Nissan 350Z of Steve Burke and Paul Hughes Honda Integra took 2nd and 3rd.

Race two was a shorter affair as the race was red flagged due to a heavy rain and a couple of offs.  Fletcher took the win, with Steward Hutchinson’s Honda Integra 2nd and Darren Hughes’ Impreza third.

The Porsche 924 series (which includes a class for Boxsters) put on a healthy display of cars, with David Clark and Sean Cooper taking Boxster honours apiece, with Jayson Flegg and Andrew Hannington claiming spoils for the 924 class.

Formula Acadamy were the big no-show, the debut event for this series designed for youngsters was cancelled after a problem with fire extinguisher certification.    They hope to make their debut at Silverstone on the weekend of the 26/27 June.

The gap in the timetable was partly filled with a hastily arranged 924 non-championship race, with reversed grids and the Boxster class starting 20 seconds after the 924s.   It didn’t take long for the Boxsters to sycthe their way through the field with the win going to David Clarke hotly pursued by Richard Sykes.   Andrew Hannington took 924 honours.

RED DRAGON MR2 Race Series 2009 review

Posted by Andrew Cliffe On February - 15 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

RED DRAGON RACE & TRACK CLUB….MR2 Mk1 Race Series

2009 Season Overview

Not since 2004 has the MR2 Challenge (as was) seen a season such as it was in 2009.   The Series which effectively became the MR2 Mk1 Race Series in 2008, because of a split away from the 750 MC has grown to such proportions that it can now be considered a major force within Club Racing.  2009 saw full grids of 30+ cars of which 50% were novice and new entrants to this budget racing series.  The first signs of the RDR&TC Mk1 popularity became evident at the first Meet & Greet and Shakedown Meeting at Silverstone in February, when a host of the new breed cars emerged in their resplendent Retro liveries, making the paddock more akin to a touring car meet and along with  the increase in spectator traffic to check out the new cars and have “Little Johnny’s” photograph taken, posing meaningfully across the bonnet of Simon Lockey’s Le Mans Gulf liveried MR2 Mk1.

On the track, the sight of the freshly built and graphic’d  race cars along with the refreshed older cars from previous seasons gave the commentators renewed vigour in their commentaries.  To the spectators who had not previously been to an MR2 Mk1 race, they must have thought they had taken a step back in time, as famous and iconic cars like the Mk1 Martini car of Chris Gray and the Mk1 Alitalia liveried car of Geraint Hughes, gyrated purposefully around the Silverstone circuit in a flash of colour.  This feeling of a new and fresh MR2 Mk1 Series was to remain in the minds and hearts throughout the 2009 season.

The Mk1 spectacle duly rolled on to it’s first meeting of the year at Snetterton in April with full supporting grids.  At this time even more of the Retro themed cars had been completed, with Chris Shackle’s Silverstone Tyres liveried car along with Richard Hearnden’s Castrol Team car driven by his son Phillip.  With a dry day and close racing the Mk1 Series rolled home anticipating what was to be a very wet Pembrey in May.

Next stop for the race boys and girls was to be Silverstone in June, with the gods smiling the Northampton circuit provided beautiful weather and near perfect track conditions, which served up some amazingly close racing, which was only to be matched by Mallory Park and Brands Hatch later in the year.  Cadwell Park played host to the next round in the season’s calendar and as usual provided some exciting racing on this tight and twisty full-on drivers’ circuit.

With the season now in full swing and the enthusiasm veritably flowing though the ever increasing paddock, the old hands were showing that there is no substitute for experience with the likes of Alex Gassman, Adam Lockwood, Ross Stoner, Gareth Newton, Jason Jesse and Sarah Wherry showing the newer entrants into this series the way home, taking most of the top spots both in qualifying and finishing positions and by the end of the season Adam Lockwood, Alex Gassman and Ross Stoner were to take home 13 Wins from 14 Starts and 6 Lap Records between them!

Snetterton loomed large for this next round on the calendar and saw the emergence of Jason Jesse’s black and white Blues Brothers Police Patrol car livery, complete with imitation roof lights (removed for scrutineering and racing).  This car became an immediate hit with the commentators and spectators alike.  Of the new boys, young Chris Shackle, was starting to show promise along with the improving form of Gareth Newton.  Snetterton also saw the magnificent liveried Red Bull Mk1 car of Andrew Knight roll into the paddock and into the ranks of the Retro graphic’d cars.

With the paddock in buoyant mood, the Series wound their way to Mallory Park, an old favourite with the Mk1 racers.  It was here that the improvement in both tyre and car builds became obvious with lap times tumbling and close racing that would have done major justice to any touring car meeting.  The downside of this event was the unfortunate accident of Roger Pullan, which resulted in him breaking his leg on the exit to the infamous Gerrards Corner, but as in all good racing stories, Roger is well on the mend and back in for the 2010 season.

Traditionally, Brands Hatch has always been the last race of the season and 2009 saw no change and as in the 2008 season ….. it rained ….. and then some!  With all the previous meetings competitors in evidence,  there was only one new boy, Neil Stratton, in his newly built MR2 Mk1 sporting a 1967 liveried Gurney /Westlake Indy car graphics.  Although it rained, it did not dampen the spirits or the performance of the boys and girls in this series and interestingly enough the existing Lap Record, previously held in the dry, was broken in the wet!

The overall view of the 2009 season was one of optimism and enthusiasm, as technically this was only the second year as a Mk1 Only Series since the break away.   Looking ahead to the 2010 season, we can only report on a continuing high amongst the club with yet again new and enthusiastic drivers registered with the RDR&TC many of which have come from other formulas to join what must be the fastest growing Club series in the universe.

2010 has already seen a plethora of new cars registered, most in Retro schemes like, Silk Cut Jaguar, McLaren F1, Renault F1, Gaggia Le Mans graphics and a very pretty Grolsch/Warsteiner Beer livery and several home brewed liveries.  The standard of new guys for the 2010 season is way above any other year in the MR2 Mk1 Racing Series in both it’s current form and the early Challenge seasons with many joining from Caterhams, Fun Cup and Locost.

So it would follow that the entire standard of both cars and competitors will be at an all time high as the MR2 Mk1 continues on it’s seemingly unstoppable journey into one of the great club formulas.
